Precedent Study and Design Proposal : Daisy Parto

Project 1 Summary
City of Culture of Galicia, Spain, by Peter Eisenman, is a Library, Archive Storage and Museum. Its sole function is a public educational place.

This piece of architecture explored the features of Fluidity and the use of Layering. Other themes this building explored were organic form and curvature, as the concept of the the City of Culture of Galicia was to form layers of rolling hills, to blend in within its surroundings.

The Concepts that I used to explored the unpacking of my Project 1:Concept Model were,
  • Using the use of 'section cuts' to represent the different layer components were in my model,
  • Unfolding and folding the model together in a graceful matter, which portrays the idea of fluidity and fluid movement seen throughout my whole concept model
  • Uniting the layers through a smooth vertical movement, this animation concept portrayed each individual layer piece uniting into one model.
  • Adding layer upon layer was another technique I used to portray my ideas of Layering and Fluidity, through each part, another layer was added until it was completed.

My 3 selections all have major similarities:
  • Different Types of Public Spaces, Community spaces. (Mainly Educational purposes)
  • Follow my two main concepts of Layering and Fluidity, also sub-concepts such as Organic Form and Curvature
3 x Functions
  • Functional hall (e.g. Sydney Convention Centre)
  • Shopping Centre
  • Theatre/Opera House

Draft Design Proposal
Selected building function:

Theatre/Opera House, I wanted a Dramatic and Flamboyant Design to blending within its 'Dramatic Theatre' idea.

I have decided to place my building in a coastal environment as its 'fluidity will blend in within this environment as well as my previous assignment renders being placed in a beach environment, and the Staten Island Institute and Zaragoza Bridge are located in water locations

Prescribed Addition representation
I was tossing up between Build AR and Crysis. I Quite enjoy working with Build AR as it felt more interactive. I feel as my model needs to be animated to show its qualities and features, such as the layers. So either option will let be portray my model in a animated/moving mode. But since there is a lack of Material options and lack of detail in using Build AR to portray my model, I have chosen Crysis.

Crysis will enable me to not only present my model in animation and in real time but it will also add the effect and the creation of the atmosphere/environment around my 'Theatre/Dramatic/Opera House' model. It will help visualise and engage my design with its purpose.

  • Present an unpacking/packing of my model animation in Crysis environment. This will show the origin of the design and present how the addition of layers unite into one piece to become one piece of architecture
  • Film the exterior model, and film the interior of the model creating views from the inside of the model will give the audience a real insight into the architecture, therefore enabling the audience to engage with my model.
  • The audience will also be able to 'walk through' my piece of architecture and receive a real experience in walking through my building and environment
  • Crysis has incredible natural and artificial lighting settings, which i will be using in my representation

  4. Hey Daisy :)

I like how all of your 3 architectures link together with concept of fluidity.
Your draft sketches looks like a flower layered together ! I think it shows layering and fluidity ;)
